DEFINITION

Performs highly responsible professional work in promoting industrial and economic development for the Department of Economic Development; performs related work as required.

WORK EXAMPLES

Advises the Department Director and Governor's Office on issues and strategies related to attracting and stimulating new investments in Iowa; responds to employment needs of work force development through vocational education and training programs.

Develops long-term strategies and programs to identify and foster business opportunities and to increase the skills of the Iowa workforce.

Maintains regular contact with businesses, public and private development organizations and government agencies to identify specific opportunities.

Prepares comprehensive reports and summarizes activities, findings, and factors which influence businesses to locate in Iowa.

Provides corporate and public officials with specific data on existing businesses, labor, work training, vocational education, transportation, utilities and other factors.

Handles the most difficult and complicated projects, usually representing large investments.

Organizes task forces and working groups as needed to handle highly complex projects.

Monitors federal and state policies and programs relating to economic development, vocational education, employment and training to analyze their impact on the agency.

Provides written, oral and visual presentations to communities and organizations in the delivery of programs.

Ability to develop programs that respond to changing work force requirements.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a major coursework in research, planning, economics, public relations, business, journalism, or marketing and experience equal to five years of full-time work that involved responsibility for interpreting laws, rules, and regulations, and/or securing compliance with them or compiling and evaluating historical, economic, business, financial programs or program data;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year of the above specialized experience for each year (thirty semester or equivalent hours) of the required education.

 

NOTE:

Employees will be required to travel.  Some positions may require employees to furnish their own means of transportation in order to conduct state business.
