APIARY INSPECTOR

 

DEFINITION

Under immediate supervision, on a seasonal basis examines and reports on honeybee colonies in order to identify contagious or infectious diseases common to bees; performs related work as required.

WORK EXAMPLES

Examines bee colonies within an assigned area of the state for various brood and adult bee diseases, and checks for parasites, vermin or other disease agents by personally handling the colonies utilizing proper protective measures.

Reviews the methods and procedures used by beekeepers which affect the production of honey in order to insure compliance with related laws, rules and regulations.

Assists or instructs beekeepers in treatment or disease control measures.

Examines all appliances used in the production of honey assuring that their use complies with applicable health and safety regulations.

Prepares reports indicating the colony inspected, results of inspection and action recommended or taken.

 

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

Knowledge of modern methods of beekeeping.

Knowledge of laws and regulations applying to the prevention and control of bee diseases.

Knowledge of diseases affecting bees and methods of eradication.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with private beekeepers and the public.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Two years of experience in the keeping of bees, production of honey or enforcement of apiary regulations;

OR

fifteen semester hours of college or technical school coursework in entomology, biology, zoology or bacteriology for one year of the required experience with a maximum substitution of two years.

 

NOTE:

Travel may be required for positions in this class.  Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.

 

NOTE:
