COMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN SUPERVISOR

 

DEFINITION

Under general direction, performs supervisory work on an agency wide basis in directing the activities of subordinate Communications Technicians engaged in the installation, maintenance and electronic problem solving repair of two-way radio communication systems; performs related work as required.

WORK EXAMPLES

Supervises and evaluates the work of subordinates; recommends personnel actions related to selection, disciplinary procedures, performance, leaves, grievances, work schedules and assignments; administers personnel policies and procedures.

Maintains equipment, supply and inventory records to account for equipment location, parts, inventory control, service history, technician time, and service billings.

Responds to and analyzes emergency and routine requests for assistance to perform necessary repairs.

Oversees the repairs of malfunctioning equipment such as mobile radios, base stations, telephone equipment, security and surveillance equipment and other electronic equipment.

Installs electronic communications equipment to implement a new or modify an existing system; by checks to insure equipment meets specifications; makes necessary adjustments/modifications to insure compatibility with existing system; performs final testing of equipment and instructs personnel assigned the equipment in its proper care and operation.

Performs preventative maintenance on electronic communications equipment to reduce incidents of equipment failure, insure proper equipment operation and comply with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations.

Designs and builds specialized test equipment.

Operates test equipment to isolate and repair malfunctioning equipment; monitors and interprets readings as registered on the test equipment and checks to insure that the equipment and/or components meet specifications using established testing procedures and standards.

Calibrates test equipment to insure accuracy of readings registered on the equipment.

 

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

Knowledge of Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations.

Knowledge of two-way radio communication methods, procedures, and equipment.

Knowledge of the techniques and technical aspects of installing, maintaining, and repairing communications and related equipment.

Knowledge of current improvements and developments in the fields of electronics and communications.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern supervisory methods including: hiring, termination, conducting employee performance evaluations, administering collective bargaining contracts and other functions of a first-line supervisor.

Ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing, with co- workers in order to direct their work.

Ability to design and modify electronic equipment to meet new or unusual situations.

Ability to properly use and care for electronic test equipment, tools, and materials.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with co- workers and supervisors.

Sufficient color perception in order to differentiate among various colors according to Electronic Institute of American standards.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Five years of experience in land mobile electronic maintenance and communications/radio system implementation;

OR

an equivalent combination of experience and education substituting one year of course work in electronic technology for two years of the qualifying experience with a maximum substitution of four years;

OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state service that includes the equivalent of three years of full-time experience as a Communications Technician shall be considered as qualifying.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

 

For positions at Public Safety only:

Ability to pass a thorough background investigation conducted by the Division of Criminal Investigation in the Department of Public Safety.
