COMMUNICATIONS TOWER WORKER
DEFINITION
Under close supervision,
investigates the need for preventive maintenance and performs a variety of
semi-skilled to skilled repairs on the state towers and radio antenna
equipment; performs related work as required.

WORK EXAMPLES
Climbs communications
towers to investigate the need for repairs or to repair existing equipment.
Assembles parts and
materials used in tower and antenna maintenance in a workshop to facilitate
future repair work on towers.
Performs preventive
maintenance on towers and antenna equipment to preserve the appearance and
safety features of the tower by chipping paint, painting, replacing light
bulbs, and performing other related tasks.
Reviews tower and
antenna problems with supervisors and recommends corrective action.
Participates in the
installation of new antennas and transmission equipment and the erection of new
towers to insure that the contractor adheres to the specifications of the
contract.
Uses hand and power tools to
perform maintenance work and repairs to the communications towers and antennas.
COMPETENCIES REQUIRED
Knowledge of radio
communication tower and antenna construction.
Knowledge of the
principles of basic electrical wiring.
Knowledge of the
characteristics of tower and antenna structures and stabilizer cables.
Knowledge of safety
techniques used in tower and antenna repair.
Ability to diagnose
and repair routine tower and antenna problems.
Ability to climb
tower structures and perform semi-skilled and skilled work at heights up to 500
feet in a variety of weather conditions.
Ability to lift tools
and materials used in tower and antenna maintenance that weigh at least 40
pounds.
Skill in the use of hand and
power tools.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS
Six months of
experience in the construction or maintenance of tower or antenna structures
such as radio and TV towers, transmission towers, communications towers or
related structures.
NOTE:
All applicants should
be sure to list any specific electronics course work relating to two-way
communications equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Ability to pass a thorough
background investigation conducted by the Division of Criminal Investigation in
the Department of Public Safety.
All applicants must be able to climb tower structures and
work at heights up to 500 feet above ground level in a variety of weather
conditions.
