CUSTODIAL ASSISTANT

 

DEFINITION

Assists a higher-level supervisor in conducting a building custodial and sanitation operation; performs related work as required.

WORK EXAMPLES

Assists supervisor by instructing employees, answering questions and distributing, balancing and checking work; may make suggestions on appointments, promotions, performance and reassignments.

Maintains inventory to distribute housekeeping supplies, materials and equipment to Custodial Workers and Leaders by requisitioning, stocking and recording items issued or received.

Directs a clothing and linen maintenance service to make, mend and alter clothing, draperies and other items, by advice and consultation on work procedures, procurement of materials and clarification of work orders.

 

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

Knowledge of cleaning and sanitizing methods and techniques as they relate to environmental sanitation and safety practices.

Knowledge of the use of chemical cleaning agents and possible hazards as related to environmental sanitation and safety practices.

Knowledge of the serviceability and care of fabrics and floor materials to include draperies, carpets and/or linen and clothing.

Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Ability to maintain routine records and complete reports, such as supplies inventories, personnel evaluations and production reports.

Skill in the operation, maintenance and minor repair of commercial cleaning equipment, such as floor machines and vacuums.

Displays high standards of ethical conduct.  Exhibits honesty and integrity.  Refrains from theft-related, dishonest or unethical behavior.

Works and communicates with internal and external clients and customers to meet their needs in a polite, courteous, and cooperative manner.  Committed to quality service.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from high school or G.E.D. and one year of full-time commercial building maintenance experience;

OR

an equivalent combination of experience and education, substituting thirty semester hours or equivalent of post high vocational training or coursework for one year of full-time work, in hotel or institutional management, commercial building maintenance, housekeeping or laundry services for the required experience.
