DRIVER

 

DEFINITION

Operates automobiles, vans and light trucks to transport supplies, equipment and people; services and maintains assigned equipment; performs related work as required.

WORK EXAMPLES

Loads supplies, equipment and materials by hand or by using a handtruck, dolly, lift and hoist; pads, stacks and secures items in position to prevent damage during shipment; delivers and stocks merchandise on premises and collects payment or issues receipt for delivered goods.

Transports patients, employees, clients and pupils between pick-up and drop-off points; maintains order during trips.

Drives ambulance to transport sick, injured or convalescent persons; places patient on stretcher and loads stretcher into ambulance; administers first aid and shackles violent patients.

Picks up and delivers mail, packages, auto parts, and miscellaneous items and supplies.

Inspects tires, lights, brakes, gas and oil; performs emergency roadside repairs such as changing tires, installing light bulbs, fuses, chains, spark plugs and related equipment.

Prepares mileage and trip tickets.

 

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

Knowledge of motor vehicle laws and the rules and regulations governing operation of state cars and vehicles.

Knowledge of the use of tools and materials used in servicing and maintaining automotive equipment.

Ability to operate buses, ambulances and light trucks in a safe manner.

Ability to make emergency repairs to equipment.

Ability to follow oral/written instructions and keep simple records.

Ability to perform heavy manual labor.

Displays high standards of ethical conduct.  Exhibits honesty and integrity.  Refrains from theft-related, dishonest and unethical behavior.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

No specific education or experience is required.  Possession of a valid State of Iowa driver’s license.

 

SELECTIVE CERTIFICATION

For designated positions, the appointing authority, with Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise prior approval, may request those applicants possessing competencies in the following areas:

 

610 Serbo-Croatian fluency

869 ability to read and write the English language

 

Applicants wishing to be considered for such designated positions must indicate their ability to read and write English on the “Special Requirements” section of the application.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Designated positions in this job class require applicants to obtain the required Commercial Drivers License and endorsements within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority at the time of hire.

 

SPECIAL NOTE

Prior to employment, applicants being considered for selected positions will be required to undergo a thorough background investigation and evaluation (including fingerprint searches) for arrest and conviction records that would indicate an individual could not serve effectively in a capacity involving financial trust.
