ELEVATOR/AMUSEMENT RIDE INSPECTOR
DEFINITION
Performs technical work in the inspection of
elevators, amusement rides, escalators, moving walks, lifts, dumbwaiters and
related equipment to insure compliance with state safety laws and regulations;
performs related work as required.

Performs inspections of
elevators, amusement rides, escalators, moving walks, lifts, dumbwaiters and
related equipment to ensure the safety of the general public and monitor
compliance with the Code of Iowa (Chapters 88A and 89A and 875 Iowa
Administrative Code 61, 62 and 71 to 77).
Interviews witnesses,
operators, and maintenance personnel, inspects equipment and maintenance logs,
and conducts investigations of other factors relative to elevator, amusement
ride, escalator, moving walk, lift, or dumbwaiter accidents as soon as possible
after their occurrence to determine the cause.
Prepares written reports
regarding all inspections and/or accidents and their causes; files reports with
the supervisor.
Inspects plans, procedures,
blueprints, equipment, and materials to be used in the installation, repair, or
replacement of elevators, escalators, moving walks or lifts prior to their
construction to ensure proper installation or repair.
Testifies at hearings
concerning results of elevator inspections and/or accidents.
COMPETENCIES REQUIRED
Knowledge of the American
National Standards Institute Standards for elevators, amusement rides,
escalators, moving walks, lifts, and dumbwaiters.
Knowledge of amusement ride
safety standards.
Knowledge of the practices,
techniques, and methods of installation, repair, and maintenance of elevators,
amusement rides, escalators, moving walks, lifts, and dumbwaiters.
Knowledge of equipment
capacities and specifications regarding construction, modification and/or
repair.
Knowledge of wire rope
and/or wire cables as used in elevators, amusement rides, escalators, moving
walks, lifts, and dumbwaiters.
Ability to inspect and
recognize causes of malfunctioning in elevators, amusement rides, escalators,
moving walks, lifts or dumbwaiters.
Ability to read and
understand blueprints.
Ability to communicate
effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to complete
required inspection and/or accident reports.
Ability to relate technical
information to contractors, architects, engineers, amusement operators,
equipment manufacturers, building owners and the public regarding the results
of inspections.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS
Graduation from high school
or G.E.D. and experience equal to four years’ work as a journey level mechanic
in construction, installation, repair, or inspection of elevators (passenger
and/or freight), amusement rides, escalators, moving walks, lifts, and/or
dumbwaiters;
OR
graduation
from an accredited two-year junior college with an associate’s degree in
engineering or industrial technology and two years’ experience in construction,
installation, repair, or inspection of elevators (passenger and/or freight),
amusement rides, escalators, moving walks, lifts, and/or dumbwaiters;
OR
graduation
from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in
engineering or, industrial technology and one year experience in
elevator/amusement ride safety;
OR
one year of experience performing the duties of an
elevator/ride inspector in a jurisdiction with substantially equivalent safety
inspection rules, regulations and experience requirements.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
All appointees to this classification must
successfully complete a QEI certification examination offered by the National
Association of Elevator Safety Authorities or similar organizations within twelve
months of employment. Appointee must
also obtain National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials (NAARSO) Inspector
Level 1 certification within one year; and Level 2 certification within five
years of employment. Similar
certification offered by the Amusement Industry Manufacturers and Suppliers
(AIMS International) organization will be considered in place of like levels of
NAARSO certification.
NOTE:
Employees must be
bondable. Extensive travel overnight is
required. Employees must arrange
transportation to and from assigned work areas
