ENGINEER 2

 

DEFINITION

Performs routine duties operating, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining facilities and all electronic equipment for Iowa Public Television at the Network Operations Center (NOC), with specialization in audio, video, digital, remote control, and computer-based engineering; performs related work as required.

WORK EXAMPLES

Operates, diagnoses, and makes minor repairs/adjustments on electronic and electrical equipment associated with the production, editing, archiving, and broadcasting of educational radio/television programs and satellite up/down link equipment.

Installs/integrates new equipment at NOC associated with the production, editing, and broadcasting of educational radio/television programs.

Verifies day-to-day compliance with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations applicable to the NOC facilities and works with service providers.

Maintains inventory and storage including the purchase of spare parts and supplies for NOC broadcast facilities.

Responsible for the general cleanliness and upkeep of NOC assigned work areas and timely completion of administrative duties (e.g., maintenance requests, purchase requisitions, maintenance reports, etc.).

 

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

Knowledge of NOC technical operating systems.

Knowledge of electronic circuits and systems.

Knowledge of safety as it relates to NOC facilities including OSHA, non-ionizing radio frequency radiation (RFR), etc.

Knowledge of computer systems, methods, techniques, electronics, and other types of equipment used in the production, editing, archiving, and transmission of radio/television programs.

Knowledge of FCC and FAA rules and regulations applicable to the assigned area of engineering responsibility.

Knowledge of techniques in repairing electronic equipment as applicable to the assigned area of engineering responsibility.

Ability to diagnose, operate, and repair complex electronic equipment applicable to the assigned area of engineering responsibility.

Ability to assume responsibility in the absence of a supervisor.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from an accredited two-year college with an associate’s degree in electronic technology, or closely related field;

OR

completion of a certificate in electronic technology, or closely related field, from a recognized technical, military, business, area school, junior college, or university, and one year of full-time experience operating, maintaining, or repairing complex electronic equipment in a radio or television transmitter/translator facility or network studio;

OR

an equivalent combination of experience and education substituting one year of required experience (30 semester hours or one year) for each year of the required education.
