ENGINEERING AIDE 2

 

DEFINITION

Provides technical support in a variety of sub-professional field and office engineering projects; performs related work as required.

WORK EXAMPLES

Provides basic roadway inspection of construction projects to insure quality of work and conformance to plans and specifications on small projects such as culvert construction, asphalt concrete resurfacing, portland cement concrete reconstruction, fencing, erosion control, lighting, signing, etc.

Inspects assigned phases of bridge, grading, and paving projects; maintains and prepares inspection reports and records on all assignments.

Operates transit, level, and other surveying instruments in performing location, topographic, and related engineering and land survey work; instructs and trains workers in the use of a rod and chain; maintains field notes, and makes computations to calculate levels, grades, elevations, curves, etc.

Maintains project cost records or other engineering records; reviews vouchers with records to verify information and enters necessary corrections; researches information relating to records; prepares periodic summaries and reports from records.

Performs a variety of elementary engineering drawing tasks in the preparation of plans.

Performs plant inspections and necessary tests in connection with concrete and ready mix concrete plants; checks batch weights, gradation of aggregates, and calculates moisture in aggregates; uses equipment to break beams and maintains records as required.

Checks plant settings and temperatures, determines percentage of asphalt in the mix, runs densities, and maintains related records.

Knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

Knowledge of elementary physical and mechanical principles and earth science.

Knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, policies and specifications as they relate to engineering projects.

Knowledge of engineering survey techniques.

Ability to work out-of-doors in all types of weather.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Experience equal to two years of full-time work in engineering survey, construction inspection, materials inspection, or materials testing;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of college, university, or technical school course work in civil engineering, construction engineering, or engineering survey for one year of the required experience with a maximum substitution of two years;

OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state classified service that includes experience equal to one year of full-time work as an Engineering Aide 1;

OR

for positions at the Department of Transportation (DOT) only, successful completion of the Engineering Technician Training Program sponsored by the DOT, known as “CoolCareers.”*

 

NOTE:

Possession of a valid Iowa chauffeurs license may be required at the time of appointment.

 

* Note:     CoolCareers is an internal Department of Transportation training program conducted for newly hired permanent employees.
