GEOLOGICAL TECHNICIAN
DEFINITION
Obtains, catalogs, and stores samples of
core materials obtained through well drilling for laboratory analysis; assists
geologists in field work; performs related work as required.

WORK
EXAMPLES
Collects samples of core and cuttings from
well drillers; assists in the operation of a drill rig in the field.
Prepares geological samples of well and
core cuttings for laboratory analysis by professional geologists.
Prepares labels for samples and stores
geological core samples under the guidelines of an established filing system.
Distributes log books and sample bags to
well drillers for their use in obtaining and logging core samples; collects log
books and samples.
Operates earth
resistivity survey equipment to determine the type of rock formation to a
100-foot depth.
Obtains water samples to be analyzed in
the laboratory; labels samples as to location, date obtained, etc.
Maintains geological
equipment such as a drill rig by performing daily preventive maintenance to
insure that the equipment is functioning properly.
Maintains geological samples for the
laboratory; retrieves for analysis and review by professional geologists.
Examines samples from core drillings
in order to advise drillers of probable location and depth of core in a
formation, referring difficult or complex questions to a professional
geologist.
COMPETENCIES
REQUIRED
Knowledge of drill rigs,
and their maintenance and operation.
Knowledge of the proper methods used in
obtaining core and well drilling samples.
Knowledge of the proper methods used in
obtaining water samples.
Knowledge of the proper methods utilized
in preparing well and core samples for laboratory analysis.
Knowledge of the proper
labeling and storing of well and core samples.
Knowledge of the filing system used in
storing samples.
Knowledge of elementary
physical and mechanical principles and earth science.
Ability to gather well core and water
samples correctly.
Ability to store samples for later
retrieval according to established policy.
Ability to obtain the
cooperation of drillers in getting geological samples.
Ability to operate an
auger rig.
Ability to work out of doors under
any type of weather condition and to withstand physically demanding work
(lifting up to 100 pounds, bending, etc.).
Displays high standards of ethical conduct. Refrains
from dishonest behavior.
Works and
communicates with all clients and customers providing polite, quality
professional service.

EDUCATION,
EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Graduation from high school or G.E.D. and
nine months of work full-time experience involving the operation of drill rigs
and/or obtaining geological samples;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and
experience substituting six semester hours of accredited post high school
education in geology or physical geography for the required experience.
NOTE
Positions in this classification may be
assigned throughout the state.
Applicants for this class may be required to obtain a valid driver’s license.
