HEALTH PHYSICIST 1

 

DEFINITION

Performs trainee to journey level professional work in radiological and environmental health protection; inspects licensed and registered radiological facilities; collects data and samples relating to radiological and environmental health; conducts studies and surveys independently, and prepares reports; performs related work as assigned.

WORK EXAMPLES

Conducts inspections, surveys, and studies; prepares technical reports and recommendations of findings.

Serves as an advisor and consultant for selected radiological problems.

Prepares and distributes education material concerning the program assigned.

Collects and analyzes contaminants encountered in the environment.

Operates and maintains technical equipment and detection instruments.

Analyzes samples obtained during inspections for hazardous properties.

Gives radiological health and educational presentations.

Researches and reviews environmental documentation.

Files legal actions and testifies in legal proceedings as required.

 

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

Knowledge of applicable local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations of radiation, radiation and environmental engineering and engineering/physics of radiochemical and biological analysis.

Knowledge of radiological safety.

Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of detection equipment.

Ability to make technically correct decisions.

Ability to physically move or climb to access areas to be inspected.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a natural science;

OR

an equivalent combination of the required education and experience, substituting one year of full-time professional experience in a radiation or environmental control program for thirty semester hours of education;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and full-time experience in radiological technology, nuclear medicine technology or radiation therapy, substituting thirty semester hours or equivalent or one year of full-time experience, for one year or thirty semester hours of the required education or experience.

 

SELECTIVE CERTIFICATION

For designated positions the appointing authority, with Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise prior approval, may request those applicants possessing a minimum of twelve semester hours of education or six months of experience or a combination of both, or a specific certificate, license or endorsement in one of the following areas:

*Applicants wishing to be considered for these positions must list applicable coursework and experience on the application.

 

NOTE:

Travel is required for positions in this class.  Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.  Work may involve exposure to excessive heat, cold, hazardous substances, construction sites, and unfavorable conditions.  May be required to respond to emergencies.  May be on 24-hour call.

 

Satisfactory completion of the equivalent of Oakridge Associated Universities courses in Group A OR Group B is required within the first two years of employment:
