HEALTH PHYSICIST 3

 

DEFINITION

Coordinates and ensures the effective execution of one of three radiological health, safety and environmental program areas (e.g., radiation machines, radioactive materials, or related environmental health/training/emergency response) and functions as a leadworker with a unit of lower level Health Physicists and staff; performs related work as assigned.

WORK EXAMPLES

Assists supervisor by instructing employees, answering questions and distributing, balancing and checking work; may make suggestions on selection, promotions and reassignments.

Plans, leads, evaluates and oversees activities in the fields of health physics, nuclear engineering, radiation health, and consumer health protection; reviews technical accuracy and completeness of reports from radiation and environmental quality specialists.

Oversees the collection and analysis of environmental sampling and data.

Assists in formulating radiation and environmental safety or health plans.

Advises and consults with representatives of the public, management, labor and professional groups on organization and operation of environmental plans.

Analyzes and evaluates special conditions and situations involving environmental problems.

Provides training for environmental staff.

Acts as technical analyst in the state's emergency response network.

Files legal actions and testifies in legal proceedings as required.

 

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

Knowledge of applicable local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations relating to radiation and environmental engineering, engineering/physics of radiochemical and biological analysis.

Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of detection equipment.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a natural science and five years of full-time experience in a radiation or environmental control program, including satisfactory completion of the equivalent of *Oakridge Associated Universities courses for advanced certification in areas of radiological health listed below;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of full-time qualifying experience for each year of the required education; no substitution for satisfactory completion of the equivalent of Oakridge Associated Universities coursework listed below;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience in radiological technology, nuclear medicine technology or radiation therapy, substituting thirty semester hours or equivalent or one year of full-time experience, for one year or thirty semester hours of the required education or experience; no substitution for satisfactory completion of the equivalent of Oakridge Associated Universities coursework listed below.

 

SELECTIVE CERTIFICATION

For designated positions the appointing authority, with Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise prior approval, may request those applicants possessing a minimum of twelve semester hours of education or six months of experience or a combination of both, or a specific certificate, license or endorsement in one of the following areas:

 

273       health physics/radiological health

 

*Applicants wishing to be considered for these positions must list applicable coursework and experience on the application.

 

NOTES:

Travel is required for positions in this class.  Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.  Work may involve exposure to excessive heat, cold, hazardous substances, construction sites, and unfavorable conditions.  May be required to respond to emergencies.  May be on 24-hour call.
