HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
Operates gasoline and diesel powered heavy
construction and related equipment; cleans, oils and services equipment; performs
related work as required.

Operates one or more types of power
construction and maintenance equipment such as overhead cranes, power shovels,
mechanical motor sweepers, derricks, motor patrol graders, scarifiers,
bulldozers, draglines, heavy tractors, backhoes, pay loaders and related heavy
construction or operating equipment.
Adjusts levers, gears, valves and
controls; presses foot and hand pedals to drive machines and control
attachments such as blades, buckets, scrapers, booms, hoists in clearing and
loading rock, debris, earth, trees, stumps and heavy objects from construction
or building sites; excavates and grades roads, ditches and road beds; dredges
ponds, channels and waterways; places guy wires, ropes, cables and pulleys on
equipment.
Operates air pumps and compressors,
sprayers, asphalt burners, earth spreaders and specially adapted construction
and operating equipment as required.
Services, lubricates, adjusts and makes minor repairs
to assigned equipment.
Knowledge of the rules of safe operation
of heavy construction equipment.
Knowledge of state motor vehicle laws.
Knowledge of rules and regulations
governing the operation and maintenance of the equipment to which assigned.
Knowledge of tools, equipment and
techniques employed in servicing and maintaining heavy equipment.
Ability to operate gasoline and diesel
powered heavy construction equipment in a safe manner.
Ability to make emergency adjustments and
repairs to equipment.
Ability to follow oral and written
instructions.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor and lift heavy
objects.

The equivalent of two
years of full-time employment involving the operation of two or more of the
following types of equipment: heavy
bulldozers, power shovels, draglines, heavy motor patrol graders, steamrollers,
overhead cranes, payloaders, heavy diesel tractors and related heavy
construction equipment exceeding four tons;
OR
satisfactory completion of a formal two-year apprenticeship as an
Operating Engineer (Heavy Equipment);
OR
substitution of satisfactory completion of specialized
training in operating heavy construction equipment at a recognized training or
trade school on a month-for-month basis for the experience requirement to a
maximum of twelve months;
OR
for designated positions, experience operating
specific kinds of heavy construction equipment may be required and applicants
will only be certified to the appointing authority who have demonstrated that
they have the required specialized experience.
All positions in this job class require applicants to
possess a Commercial Driver's License Class B and an Air Brakes Unrestricted
Endorsement at the time of hire.
