LAW ENFORCEMENT INSTRUCTOR
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, instructs officers at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy; performs related work as required.

WORK EXAMPLES
Plans, assigns, checks work, gives instructions and
maintains discipline.
Counsels and provides guidance to officers in the area of
the instructor's proficiency.
Prepares, administers, and grades examinations.
Uses educational media equipment for instructional purposes.
Assists in planning, preparing, and evaluating training
materials and course outlines.
Writes articles for law enforcement publications.
Corresponds with graduates in response to questions or
problems in the field of the instructor's experience.
Makes public appearances before law enforcement agencies or
interested public groups.
COMPETENCIES REQUIRED
Knowledge and understanding of programs, responsibilities,
organization, standards, procedures, rules, and regulations of the Law
Enforcement Academy.
Knowledge of the principles, methods, tools, and techniques
of progressive law enforcement training and instructional methods.
Knowledge of current law enforcement programs, literature,
curricula, printed and visual material available.
Ability to persuade, challenge, and motivate classroom
students.
Ability to research, plan and make use of law enforcement
training materials.
Ability to operate various office machines as needed.
Displays high standards of ethical conduct. Exhibits honesty and integrity. Refrains from theft-related, dishonest or unethical behavior.
Works
and communicates with internal and external clients and customers to meet their

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or
university with major course work in criminology, police administration, police
science or a closely related field, or the social or behavioral sciences and
five years of progressively responsible peace officer experience in a law
enforcement agency or program;
OR
graduation
from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in
criminology, policy administration, police science or a closely related field,
or the social or behavioral sciences and three years of experience as a jailer
trainer, jail administrator, peace officer, civilian jailer, or correctional
officer in a jail, holding facility, prison or correctional institution;
OR
an
equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of
graduate level course work in law, criminology, police administration, police
science or a closely related field, for each year of the qualifying experience
to a maximum of three years;
OR
substituting
six months of full-time employment as a training instructor in a recognized law
enforcement training or educational program for each year of the qualifying
experience.
SELECTIVE CERTIFICATION
For certain designated positions, the appointing authority,
with Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise
prior approval, may request only those applicants possessing a minimum of:
twelve semester hours of education, six months of experience, or a combination
thereof in one of the following:
338 media specialist
339 jailer
355 law enforcement
