MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST
DEFINITION
Performs routine to highly complex chemical,
bacteriologic, hematologic and other tests and examinations used in the
diagnosis, care, and treatment of patients; performs related work as required.

WORK EXAMPLES
Carries out special chemical analysis procedures as
requested by medical staff; performs uric acid, glucose, bilirubin, amylase,
cholesterol, calcium determinations and other chemical analysis as requested.
Performs routine hematological and serological
determinations such as white cell counts, hemoglobin, platelet, reticulocyte,
and sedimentation rates.
Performs routine chemical and bacteriological
examinations of urine, sputum, bile, abscess and throat cultures, and stool
samples for various kinds of determinations.
Monitors test analysis and specimen examinations to
ensure acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained; observes
performance of instrument maintenance and function checks; maintains high
quality control in work.
Organizes work in a laboratory; assumes responsibility
for maintenance, sterilization, and sanitation of equipment and environment;
sets work schedules as required.
Attends professional and staff meetings; maintains
records; writes and reviews reports as required.
Conducts, when required, electrocardiographic,
electroencephalographic and radiologic examinations.
COMPETENCIES REQUIRED
Knowledge of current laboratory principles and
techniques.
Knowledge of the principles of chemistry, physics,
hematology, urinalysis, serology, bacteriology and/or related laboratory
specialties.
Knowledge of current literature and developments in
medical laboratory techniques and equipment.
Knowledge of X-ray techniques and equipment if
required.
Knowledge of electrocardiographic and
electroencephalographic techniques and equipment if required.
Knowledge of quality control requirements used in a
medical laboratory.
Knowledge of chemical, hazardous energy and biological
hazards such as hepatitis and AIDS as well as other blood borne pathogens.
Ability to conduct laboratory work independently in
organizing, analyzing and evaluating tests.
Ability to work with precision, utilizing dexterity in
making fine, coordinated movements.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet federal government employment
regulations as published in the Federal Register 42 CFR 493.1489. A summary of these include the following:
An
Associates Arts degree from an accredited college or university with major
course work in laboratory science or medical technology;
OR
sixty
semester hours of post high school course work from an accredited college or
university that includes a minimum of 24 semester hours in medical laboratory
technology and completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved by
the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services;
OR
post
high school course work from an accredited college or university that includes
6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology and an additional 12
semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology and
completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved by the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services.
