RADIOLOGICAL ELECTRONICS TECHNICIAN
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, performs the inspection,
maintenance, calibration and instrument exchange of instruments and equipment
used to measure radioactivity; performs related work as required.

WORK EXAMPLES
Assists a supervisor by performing, in accordance with
set procedures, policies, and standards, such duties as instructing employees
about tasks, answering questions about procedures and policies, distributing
and balancing the workload and checking work; may make occasional suggestions
on appointments, promotions, and reassignments.
Performs maintenance on radiological instruments and
equipment such as survey instruments, dosimeters, dosimeter charges and
training equipment other than radioactive source materials equipment in order
to assure that the items are in proper operating condition by following
established processes and procedures and applying knowledge previously learned.
Retrofits the CD V-715 survey meter in order to assure
its proper operation within current requirements by following established
procedures.
Periodically performs operational tests of equipment,
replaces batteries as necessary and/or evacuates equipment needing technical
maintenance or calibration to the state maintenance facility in order to assure
that the equipment is functioning properly and/or that appropriate repairs are
made.
Handles and uses radioactive material and the CD
V-794, model 2 calibrator by applying established practices, techniques and
procedures and using proper safety precautions.
Maintains a sufficient stock of float equipment and
batteries on hand in order to permit replacement of items found to be defective
or in need of annual calibration.
Assists local coordinators in shelter licensing,
shelter posting, survival kit distribution and RADEF planning for both wartime
and peacetime disasters.
COMPETENCIES REQUIRED
Knowledge of electronic theory, circuits, and

installing, maintaining and repairing electronic equipment.
Knowledge of the principles of radioactivity.
Knowledge of the operational and basic maintenance
procedures applicable to radiological detection equipment.
Knowledge of current improvements and developments in
electronics.
Ability to apply troubleshooting logic in diagnosing,
isolating, and repairing circuit malfunctions.
Ability to read and interpret schematic and circuit
diagrams.
Ability to properly use electronic test equipment,
tools and materials.
Ability to read and interpret parts and service
manuals.
Ability to maintain neat and accurate records.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS
Two years of work experience in servicing and
maintaining a variety of electronic equipment (i.e., radio and television
transmitting or receiving sets, public address systems, recording systems, and
military electronic equipment);
OR
an
equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year of
post high school education (thirty semester hours or its equivalent) in
electronic technology for one year of the required work experience with a
maximum substitution of two years.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents must complete the following courses of
instruction within two years of the date of employment: fundamentals course for
Radiological Monitors; Fundamental course for Radiological Response Teams;
Radiological Monitor Instructor course; and Fundamentals course for
Radiological Officer.
Incumbents
must possess, or obtain (within one year of the date of employment) Nuclear
Regulatory Commission license for the possession and use of multi-currie
amounts of radioactive material.
SPECIAL NOTES
Incumbents will be required to travel extensively
throughout the State of Iowa and stay out overnight. Some out of state travel and/or training will
be required as assigned by the agency of employment. Incumbents will be required to make
arrangements on their own regarding transportation to and from assigned work
areas. Incumbents may, on occasion, be
required to provide their own means of transportation in order to conduct state
business.
