SOILS PARTY SUPERVISOR

 

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, plans, assigns, and supervises the work of several soils survey parties in the field; performs related work as required.

WORK EXAMPLES

Schedules, assigns, supervises, and evaluates the work of several soils survey parties gathering field data on different project locations.

Assures the contact of property owners for permission to enter onto property in order to obtain required soils information.

Participates in surveying the more difficult traverses.

Coordinates soil descriptions and sampling patterns of individual crews to ensure necessary information is obtained.

Makes changes in established sampling procedures in order to obtain special information concerning soil characteristics.

Reviews property damage vouchers and work progress reports in order to verify hours and project numbers, and to ensure accurate calculations.

Gathers, approves, and forwards time sheets to the central office.

Reviews sampling and reporting techniques through periodic visits to the projects in order to ensure that necessary data is collected and policies are carried out.

Alters drilling and sampling procedures to maintain an effective survey at the lowest cost.

Studies and makes recommendations as to the most effective utilization of personnel and equipment; trains new field personnel.

Coordinates with agency departments the arrangements for the repair or replacement of equipment or other items used in field operations.

Investigates complaints from the public regarding the work of field crews.

Supervises subordinates to the full range required for collective bargaining purposes by keeping time records, conducting performance evaluations, hiring, terminating, administering collective bargaining contracts, and otherwise acting as a first-line supervisor.

Skill in the operation and maintenance of a variety of soil sampling and drilling equipment.

Skill in the operation of engineering survey equipment.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from high school or G.E.D., and five years of field experience with a soils sampling crew;

OR

the equivalent of one year of full-time, current, continuous experience as a Soils Party Chief in the state classified service shall be considered as qualifying.

 

NOTE:

All applicants for this classification must be able and available for frequent, statewide travel and must possess or be able to obtain a valid Iowa Driver license.
