SERIES CONCEPT

This series performs inspections of bridges to determine if bridges are safe for use by the motoring public.  Positions in this series gather and review inspection data through inspections and the coordination of the review and processing of bridge inspection data.

EXCLUSIONS

Positions performing professional engineering work in transportation projects and programs related to such areas as roadway planning, design, construction and maintenance should be classified in the Transportation Engineer Series.

Positions responsible for performing a variety of highway activities including snow and ice control; roadway repair and maintenance; checking grades and elevations; sampling, testing and inspecting construction materials; and routine survey activities should be classified in the Highway Technician Series.

Positions responsible for performing engineering support, or supervising the provision of engineering support, and construction trades related work including project inspection, monitoring and survey should be classified in the Construction Technician Series.

Positions responsible for performing para-professional work in technical engineering design; engineering software; management of consultant services; geotechnical design; cartography; photogrammetry; property title determination pavement design; pavement management; automation enhancement; technical plans; detail drawings; or maps for the planning and design of roadways, bridges, right of way, culverts, park facilities, bikeways and trails, lighting, drainage and flood control systems, signing, safety improvements, pavement markings, traffic control devices and related civil and transportation engineering projects should be classified in the Design Technician Series.

Positions performing work directing and coordinating the work of a specialized bridge maintenance/repair crew in a Department of Transportation District should be classified as District Bridge Repair Specialists.

CLASS DISTINCTIONS

Bridge Inspector 1

Persons in this class perform paraprofessional engineering work on a specialized team conducting detailed inspections of existing bridges; as a member of the office technical team, reviews/processes inspection data provided by the inspection teams; performs specialized maintenance activities on suspension bridges.

Bridge Inspector 2

Persons in the class direct and coordinate the work and participates as a member of a specialized team in performing paraprofessional engineering in detailed inspection of existing bridges; coordinates the activities of and provides guidance to the inspection teams and operators of under bridge access units; directs and coordinates the review/processing of bridge inspection data.
