Primary duties and
responsibilities of this series involve technical engineering/architectural
work or licensed/registered professional engineering and architectural work
involving the construction, maintenance, and operation of buildings, utilities,
earthwork, and related facilities.
Duties include inspecting existing facilities and related mechanical or
electrical systems and equipment (including but not limited to sewer systems, heating
plants, and water treatment operations), and preparing recommendations for
repairs and improvements; preparing or reviewing designs and specifications for
new facilities; and inspecting sites before, during, and upon completion of
construction.
Position incumbents that
perform specialized technical engineering duties (e.g., Environmental
Engineers, Transportation Engineers, etc.) or do not require a licensed
professional engineer or registered architect with the State of Iowa at the
advanced level of the series (Construction/Design Engineer) are excluded.
This is the experienced
level of the series where position incumbents perform all technical
engineering/architectural duties in the design, inspection, maintenance and
operation of various state operated facilities, except those required to be
performed by a registered professional engineer or licensed architect. Position incumbents perform assignments
within operational policies/guidelines established by the agency and function
with limited supervision and oversight.
This is the advanced level
of the series and requires current licensure as a professional engineer or
registration as an architect by applicable State of Iowa licensing/registration
boards. At this level, position
incumbents perform all technical engineering/architectural duties, including
those (e.g., advanced technical review of documents, structural calculations
and stamping/sealing of documents) that must be performed by a registered
professional engineer or licensed architect.
Although licensure/registration is a primary allocation factor for this
class, position incumbents may also oversee lower level staff and perform
general administrative duties in the agency programs in which they work in.
