Duties: Under the general supervision of a registered nurse or physician, these positions provide direct patient care and perform nursing procedures including administration of medication and inter-muscular and subcutaneous injections and provision of prescribed emergency care.

Duties: Performs professional nursing work in a clinical role in the management of the nursing care of clients within a health care facility; provides clinical leadership of Licensed Practical Nurses and assistive personnel; plans and conducts educational sessions, including classroom and on-site teaching that requires licensure as a registered nurse; reviews medical records of decedents and assists in the duties and responsibilities of the State Medical Examiner’s Office; performs related work as required.

The Anamosa State Penitentiary (ASP) is an adult male correctional institution which houses approximately 1,300 predominately medium and maximum security offenders. The offender population generally ranges in age from 18 to senior citizens.
The Health Services Department employs a full time physician, a full time dentist and contracts for optometry and radiology services. We have a full staff of nurses that provide medical coverage 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The staff nurse employed at ASP provides a full range of nursing services and involves the use of the nursing process in disease prevention and health promotion, recognition and treatment of illnesses and injuries, counseling and evaluation of the effectiveness of the care provided. The medical staff work together as a member of a interdisciplinary team to provide primary health care to incarcerated individuals.
The Cherokee Mental Health Institute is a 58-bed hospital for the mentally ill. Patients include children, adolescents to age 18, and adults. The average length of stay for adult patients is 36 days, and for children and adolescents is 26 days.
Staff Registered Nurses (RN's) give direct patient care, pass medications, complete nursing assessments and document progress for each patient. The RN educates and participates in team treatment planning for each patient and his or her family. Resident Treatment Workers (nursing assistants) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN's) are supervised by the RN. LPNs are responsible for giving direct patient care, passing medications, educating patients and their families, documentation, escorting patients to activities and providing information for team treatment planning.
The Clarinda Correctional Facility is a Medium Security Facility that provides 24 hour health care coverage for approximately 1000 male offenders at two sites. CCF has on-site medical, dental, psychiatric and optometry services. The health care staff work together to provide services for incarcerated individuals including health promotion, disease prevention as well as treatment of acute illnesses and injuries.
Clarinda MHI is located in the southwestern corner of Iowa and serves two populations. It includes a 20 Bed Acute Psych Inpatient Program: Serves those 18 years of age and over with a serious mental illness. Our purpose is to work together with the communities to deliver quality mental health services to Iowans. We also have a 35 Bed Geropsych Program which is a Nursing Facility for the Mentally Ill: Our purpose is to provide long-term care to Adult Iowans with Chronic Psychiatric and Behavioral problems whose level of care meets the IFMC guidelines for nursing care and whose behaviors are such that community-bases facilities cannot manage these residents. All residents have a primary DSM-IV diagnosis.

The Fort Dodge Correctional Facility is a medium security adult male prison opened in 1998. The current offender capacity is 1,310. The prison population includes state offenders and federal detainees. The facility has been designated as the youthful offender prison in the state of Iowa. The median age of the offenders is 23 years old and the average age of the offenders is 26 years old.
Registered Nurses provide correctional nursing services 24 hours per day, 7 days per week to the offender population. Correctional nursing includes the coordination of the total scope of health care for all health conditions. Day shift hours are 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., evening shift hours are 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and night shift hours are 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. The Registered Nurses are unionized and bid for shifts depending upon seniority.
The Glenwood Resource Center is a 400-bed Intermediate Care Facility for the mentally retarded. This Center deals with complex medical and behavioral conditions from the pediatric to geriatric population. Glenwood utilizes primary nursing caseloads and active interdisciplinary teams.

The Iowa Correctional Institution for Women provides 24 hour health care coverage to 600 female offenders. The Health Services team provides services for nursing, dental, pharmacy, optometry, radiology and laboratory. Mental health services are provided as needed. Iowa Medical and Classification Center is the departments reception center for all new commitments to the correctional system. The population incarcerated can vary from youths to aged adults, and include both women and men, from the healthy through the chronically ill, mentally ill, and the developmentally disabled. The major thrust of nursing care at IMCC is providing primary care serves for the incarcerated population through screening activities, direct patient care, analyzing individual health behaviors, teaching, and assisting individuals in assuming responsibility for their own health to the best of their ability, knowledge and circumstances. IMCC also has a 23 bed licensed psychiatric forensic hospital located within the facility. Nursing staff on the forensic hospital are an integral part of a treatment team providing mental health care and evaluation for the correctional system as well as the Iowa Criminal Justice System. Nursing coverage is provided to both areas twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

The Woodward Resource Center is an Intermediate Care Facility for the mentally retarded. This Center is seeking Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses for ALL shifts to care for the mentally and physically challenged. Care providers work as part of an interdisciplinary team to help individuals develop their own person centered plans designated to identify how and where each person wants to live their life. Professional and direct care staff support the person in meeting these goals. All services offered on campus meet state and federal standards.
